Here's just a small sampling of projects we have supported…

Springhill+Cemetery.jpg

Springhill Cemetery is a historic area that contains the remains of hundreds of significant people. Springhill, a sleepy community at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Gallatin County, Montana, has played host to tragedy, comedy, and intrigue. The community contains fascinating stories about all walks of life. These Story Maps tell the tales of the extraordinary ordinary Springhill residents.

The Gallatin History Museum, with funding from the Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society and local resident Bill Wright, went about the work of collecting historical biographies of the people that are buried in the historic Springhill Cemetery and creating a story map to allow visitors access to those biographies while visiting the cemetery or from their home computers. The GHM hopes to replicate this body of work for other local cemeteries and also share the how to manual for other communities that would like to preserve their local heritage stories.

Here is a major project M.G.T.P.S.

Photo 1 was taken about 1990 or before (It was a print photo that I cannot date). Photo 2 was taken in 2008. Note the differences.

In the 1980's M.G.T.P.S. decided to stop the deterioration of the two main buildings in Elkhorn, and NOT renovate them but put them back, as they were. This they did by reinstalling windows, repairing with like material as original. After the job was completed, they turned the two buildings over the Bureau of Land Management and they have looked after the sites thereafter.
